Breton Islands Kayaking Trip
A leisurely day paddle for an intermediate this trip almost always sees seals and eagles around the Islands.

Launch Point:

Launch at Rebecca Spit Provincial Park on Quadra Island. The park is worth the visit in itself, with a trail that runs the length of the spit allowing for some great views of the Coast Mountains.

Parking:

Parking is available in the park at several spots, but you may want to drive to the end turnaround parking lot. Its a little nicer than the other areas to park and it also has outhouse (toilets) near by, as well as a great grassy area near the parking lot. Walk by the picnic tables and fire pits to the beach and launch there.

Chart: 3539

  Skill Level Required: Intermediate

The Breton Islands are located off Rebecca Spit on the east side of Quadra Island. This trip requires and open water crossing off the end of the spit that can expose you to wind, waves and the Quadra/Cortes ferry, hence the Intermediate rating.

Route:

Follow the spit North toward open water, but stay close to the land. As you round the end you will doubtless catch a whiff of the stench of a salt water marsh that formed after the last major earthquake right on the tip of the spit.
Now, you'll have to cross to the Bretons, they are easy to spot as the are the biggest small islands near you at this point. Look northward and there they are. Caution: Check your weather forecast for wind, you don't want to get caught out here if the wind comes up and remember the afternoons are almost always windier than mornings. Also, the Quadra/Cortes ferry runs right past here so look to your left and right for signs of the Tenaka as it ferries to Cortes and back from Heriot Bay within sight to the west of you.

Aim for the south end of the rocks at the Bretons where a seal colony lounges on sunny rocks viewable most every day. Don't get too close or you will send them scurrying into the water and causing them to waste energy. Remember if wildlife reacts to you being there - your just too close. Stay back 100 metres so as to enjoy the sighting with a comfortable space cushion.

Behind the islands you will find some islets and a narrow channel that is great paddling. To complete the trip you can head up to Village Bay or around to Open Bay or just backtrack. See Quadra Island Chart 3539 for reference.
