About Quadra Island

Quadra Island Map

At the top of the Strait of Georgia, Quadra Island and a handful of other small and not so small islands attempt to plug the route off as best it can, but even a millenium of geolgical transformation hasn't managed to comlpetly stop the ebb and flow of the great Pacific Ocean as it surges and pulls its way through the narrow channels.

Sea Kayaking Quadra Island

Quadra Island is a wonderful sea kayaking destination with protected waters and stunning vistas. Sheltered from the outside ocean swell Quadras conveluted shoreline and narrow channels makes for ideal sea kayaking adventure. Sheltered but not beniened the island is surrounded by narrow channels and more islands and in these channels the tide flows and ebbs. Some channels experience tidal wash upwards of 15 knots and beyond creating whirl pools, standing waves and very, very dangerous waters for the sea kayaker.

  The West Coast of Canada

Geographically speaking, Quadra Island is located on the west coast of Canada, approximatly half way up Vancouver Island. Nestled between Vancouver Island and the mainland coast Quadra enjoys some fairly warm, dryish weather by west coast standards.

Capt' George Vancouver

Captin George Vancouver is honored with the disguished reconition for "discovering" Quadra Island around 1800. Of course, when he discovered it the Coast Salish peoples had already been inhabiting it for a very long time.

Valdes Island is Quadra Island?

Quadra Island was not always Quadra Island. No, it was originally named Valdes Island with the coming of the whites and remained that way until 1903 when it was renamed "Quadra Island" after the Spanish Explorer Bodega Y Quadra.
